Andor S2
EYELINE
Andor: Season 2 finds the hero character stealing an Imperial star fighter, built fully in CG and featured heavily in our work, called the TIE Avenger. The English countryside was transformed into an industrial farm landscape fit for a galaxy far, far away. To achieve this look, a real-world cornfield in England was digitally extended for hundreds of miles using matte painting and 3D geometry. We additionally modeled and textured huge industrial grain silos based on Art Department concepts, which towered over a hundred feet high. On location, only a small portion of the environment was shot practically so, to add scale, we repeated our CG silos across the horizon. In the sequence, Cassian Andor swoops in via the TIE Avenger to save the Rebels from a storm trooper attack, firing at the silos. As his shots hit, the grain stored within explodes to engulf the stormtroopers in a tsunami-style wave of CG grain, with both the explosions and grain FX simulated in Houdini. In another sequence, we added incredible production value to the hospital on Coruscant by extending additional floors to the single floor shot on the stage. The one-story practical set needed to be floor-to-ceiling glass, so we added an extra 18 levels to the stage, adding CG glass with both digital reflections and digital medical staff walking and talking on the extra floors. Another seamless set extension our teams championed was the wedding set in Chandrila. Our challenge here was twofold: the sheer scale of the set extension and the length of the shots. Shot in one extended take that lasted 4 minutes, we added 360 degree environment extensions to a green screen stage, inspired by the Dolomites in Italy. Lastly, a CG creature of a new alien species, doodar, was created fully by our model and animation team. We were given creative freedom to design this new creature, the task being that it should run like a hippo with tusks that can kill.
