Vivid Sydney 2026 - Vaiola
Spinifex Group
For Vivid Sydney 2026, Spinifex Group collaborated with Sāmoan-Australian artist Angela Tiatia to transform the façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia into Vaiola, a monumental large-scale architectural projection work exploring themes of migration, memory, longing and belonging.
Working closely with the artist, Spinifex translated Tiatia’s distinctive visual language into a civic-scale immersive experience, reimagining the MCA façade as a living moving-image canvas integrated directly with the building’s architecture. Through cinematic composition, large-scale motion design and storytelling, the work expanded intimate material into a powerful public artwork visible across Sydney Harbour.
Across the projection surface, pearls, water, fire, flowers and the female form emerge and dissolve through layered visual sequence. Rather than treating the building as a passive projection surface, the content was carefully designed to respond to the geometry and physical structure of the MCA itself.
The result was a visually ambitious public artwork that demonstrated how large-scale projection can support deeply personal storytelling while transforming one of Australia’s most recognisable cultural landmarks into an immersive experience.
