Vivid Sydney 2026 - Circles of Rhythm - ASN Co building
Giles Westley, Anna Fraser, Julian Burgess
Circles of Rhythm was initially conceived as a dialogue between architecture, design and public space. The work was developed for the Commercial Travellers Association Building in Martin Place, where the modernist legacy of Harry Seidler and the influence of the Bauhaus provided a natural conceptual foundation. Drawing on geometry, colour and movement, the work explores how simple visual elements can communicate optimism, clarity and shared possibility.
When the building was removed from the Vivid Sydney program, the project underwent a significant redesign for the façade of the ASN Co Building in The Rocks. At first, this example of pre-Federation Anglo-Dutch architecture seemed at odds with the original concept. Yet, as is often the case in design, the challenge revealed new opportunities and unexpected connections.
A celebration of pure form, Circles of Rhythm draws on moments in design history when artists, architects and designers imagined new ways of seeing the world. Inspired by the Bauhaus ideals of unity, clarity and progress, the work traces an evolving language of shape, colour and rhythm, guiding audiences through the building blocks of modern design.
Beginning with a single point of light, forms emerge and evolve into lines, circles, squares and triangles before dissolving once more. Through this simple visual language, Circles of Rhythm becomes a meditation on perception, creativity and possibility, reminding us that even the simplest ideas can give rise to entirely new ways of thinking.
