Mickey 17: The Tale of Two Mickeys
Rising Sun Pictures
In Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson plays two incarnations of the same man. Both share the frame at close range. Each must feel completely authentic.
On set, a multi-camera rig recorded performance and lighting in detail. Together with principal photography, this created a deep reference set for seamless head-replacement work.
With a stand-in in many plates, compositors replaced the double’s head, refined anatomy and corrected eyelines. Edge treatment, matte finesse and subtle warping merged body and face into Mickey’s likeness.
Shot by shot, skin response, specular rolloff, occlusion and contact shadows were matched to the plate. Proportions and facial micro-alignment were adjusted by hand so nothing drew attention.
What defined the process was adaptability. New capture methods and traditional compositing had to work in unison to meet the demands of the film. It was the dialogue between technology and artistry across departments that allowed two Mickeys to exist on screen as one seamless performance.
