An Impossible Life

animpossiblelife.com.au

An Impossible Life is a conservation short film created for the Sea Turtle Foundation that uses science-led generative AI to visualise the “lost years” of sea turtles - the 20 to 30 years they spend in the open ocean after hatching. While marine science understands this life stage through tracking data and ecological research, it has never been filmed due to the scale, remoteness and timeframes involved. The film follows a single green sea turtle from its first moments entering the ocean, through vast pelagic environments, reef systems and increasingly dangerous encounters with predators, storms and human-made threats. As the turtle matures, the journey culminates in an encounter with a drifting ghost net - one of the leading causes of sea turtle mortality today. A custom AI workflow translated scientific research into cinematic imagery, with every scene reviewed and refined for ecological plausibility. The project reframes AI not as a shortcut for content creation, but as a conservation communication tool capable of making invisible scientific knowledge emotionally visible and publicly accessible.
